THE LIVING COMPOSERS PROJECT  

Mehmet Aktuğ

(b. 30 May 1959, İstanbul – d. 30 November 2009, Essen).

Turkish composer of mostly orchestral and chamber works that have been performed in Europe and elsewhere.

Mr. Aktuğ studied violin with Hazar Alapınar at the Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Devlet Konservatuvarı – State Conservatory of Dokuz Eylül University in İzmir from 1970–76, where he later studied composition with Muammer Sun from 1976–80. He then studied composition with Günther Becker at the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule in Düsseldorf from 1980–87.

His music has represented Turkey at the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers four times (1989, Ohne Titel; 1990, Wagenaugen; 1991, Fine Esilio; 2003, Odyssee). His music has been performed in Cuba, Ecuador, France, Germany, Turkey, and the USA.

He taught music theory and solfège at the Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Devlet Konservatuvarı from 1987–2009.
