Bikkembergs, Kurt (b. August 1963, Hasselt).
Belgian composer of 140 chamber and choral works that have been successfully
performed across Europe, and that appear on numerous recordings.
Mr. Bikkembergs studied music pedagogics, choral direction, composition, and orchestral direction at the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven, graduating with a laureate diploma and First Prize cum laude in composition. After completing these studies, he studied further with Luc Van Hove and Heinz Kratochwil.
He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the P. Meyers Prize (Hasselt) and one from the Harmonia Competition (The Netherlands); he has also received the Cera – Jeugd en Muziek Vlaanderen Prize for his entire oeuvre (1993).
The Marcato Piano Quartet, the Tapiola Choir and the recorder quartet Vier op ‘n rij, among numerous others, have commissioned him; so have the carillon players Arie Abbenes, Geert D’Hollander and Frank Steyns and the organist Jo Hermans.
His works have been featured at the Cantate Maasmechelen, Children’s Choir (Halle), International Youth (Neerpelt), Orgel Plus (Bottrop, Germany), and Stichting Culturele Evenementen (Utrecht) festivals, among many others.
Mr. Bikkembergs is currently the director of the choir at the Lemmensinstituut and also a teacher of choral direction, composition and counterpoint there. Since 2002, he has been artistic director of the chorus of the Flemish Opera and co-Kapellmeister (with W. Ceuleers) of the Cathedral of Brussels.
