Darbellay, Jean-Luc (b. July 2, 1946, Bern). Swiss composer of mostly orchestral, chamber and vocal works that have been performed throughout the world; he is also active as a conductor.
Mr. Darbellay studied clarinet at the Konservatorium Bern and had composition studies with Cristóbal Halffter and Dimitri Terzakis. He then attended masterclasses with Heinz Holliger and Klaus Huber at the IMF Lucerne, as well as with Edison Denisov, to whom he also served as an assistant in 1993. Furthermore, he attended seminars with Pierre Boulez in Paris and conducting classes in Bern and privately with Franco Ferrara.
His honors include First Prize in the jubilee competition of the Berner Symphonie-Orchester (2002, for Ondes). His music has represented Switzerland at the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers several times, most recently in 2001, for Oyama, as well as four times at the ISCM World Music Days (1999, Bucharest/Chisinau; 2000, Luxembourg; 2002, Hong Kong; 2004, Switzerland).
He is also active in other positions. As a conductor, he has toured throughout Europe and in Canada, China, Malaysia, South Korea, and the USA. He founded the LUDUS Ensemble in Bern in 1978, which specializes in contemporary music, and has since served as its artistic director and principal conductor. He later founded the Spectrum Ensemble in Russia, which features both Russian and Swiss musicians, and co-founded the composers group Lacroix in 1993, which remains active today. He has served as president of the Swiss section of ISCM since 1994 and as such organized the ISCM World Music Days in Switzerland in 2004.
He is married to the clarinettist Elsbeth Darbellay. Their son Olivier is a cellist and French hornist and their daughter Noëlle-Anne is a violinist.
