THE LIVING COMPOSERS PROJECT  

Koen Dejonghe

(b. 27 June 1957, Kuurne).

Belgian composer of mostly chamber, vocal and piano works that have been performed throughout Europe; he is also active as a pianist.

Mr. Dejonghe studied piano with Levente Kende at the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven, where he graduated in 1982 with a combined diploma in music education and piano. He then studied composition with Willem Kersters at the Koninklijk Vlaams Conservatorium in Antwerp, where he earned a premier prix in fugue in 1990 and a premier prix in composition in 1994.

Among his honours are First Prize in the competition for chamber music of the Muizelhuisconcerten (1990, for Vier Stukken), the Provinciale Prijs from the province of West Flanders (1993, for Gezellesuite; 1996, for Sintra), the Jef van Hoof Prijs (1998, for String Quartet No. 2), and the award for arrangements in the competition Song Expo (2001, for Jace and Concerto).

As a pianist, he has made numerous recordings for VRT and has often served as an accompanist.

He has taught chamber music, composition and harmony at the Stedelijke Academie voor Muziek, Woord en Dans in Sint-Niklaas since 1981 and chamber music at the Muziekacademie van het Gemeenschapsonderwijs in Antwerp since 1981. He has lectured on improvisation and practical harmony at the Koninklijk Vlaams Conservatorium since 1986.
