Ivan Fedele

(b. 6 May 1953, Lecce).

Italian composer of mostly orchestral, chamber, choral, vocal, and piano works that have been performed throughout the world.

Mr. Fedele initially studied philosophy at the Università degli Studi in Milan. He then studied composition with Azio Corghi, counterpoint and harmony with Renato Dionisi and piano with Bruno Canino and Ilonka Deckers at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan, where he graduated in 1981. He also studied composition with Franco Donatoni at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome during this time.

Among his honours are First Prize in the competition of the Internationale Gaudeamus Muziekweek in Amsterdam (1981, for Chiari and Per accordar), Primo Premio in the competition Goffredo Petrassi in Parma (1989, for Epos) and three prizes from the Académie Charles-Cros (Le Monde de la Musique and Choc de la Musique, 2003, both for the recording of Animus Anima I on Stradivarius; Coup de Cœur, 2004, for his recording on L'Empreinte Digitale). Portrait concerts have been given at the festival Musica in Strasbourg (1996), the festival Musica Nova in Helsinki (1998), the festival Aspects des musiques d'aujourd'hui in Caen (1999), and the festival Fedele + at the Cité de la Musique in Paris (2004). He is also the subject of the book Ivan Fedele – Les Cahiers de l'IRCAM / Compositeurs d'aujourd'hui no. 9 (1996, IRCAM/Centre national d'art et de culture Georges-Pompidou).

He has taught at the Civica Scuola di Musica in Milan, the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Strasbourg, the Conservatorio Giovanni Battista Martini in Bologna, the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Como, the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan, and the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Turin. He has given masterclasses in Belgium, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the USA.
