Freisitzer, Roland (b. August 16, 1973, Vienna). Austrian composer of mostly orchestral and chamber works that have been performed in Asia and Europe; he is also active as a conductor.
Mr. Freisitzer had his first musical experiences in Warsaw and Cape Town, but began serious musical studies at the Wiener Konservatorium in 1987. He studied composition privately with Alfred Schnittke in Moscow from 1989-91, with Edison Denisov at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow from 1991-93 and with Avet Terterian in Yerevan from 1992-94. Lastly, he studied composition with A. Mnzkanian at the Conservatory of Music in St. Petersburg from 1996-99 and with Faraj Karayev at the Baku Music Academy in 1999. He has also attended masterclasses with Magnus Lindberg, Krzysztof Penderecki and Marco Stroppa.
His music has been performed in Austria, Azerbaijan, Germany, Macedonia, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, and the UK, including once at the Gaudeamus Muziekweek (2002).
As a conductor, he served as first guest conductor of the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra in Yerevan from 1992-95. In addition, he founded the Moscow Orchestra in 1994, with the help of Russian sponsors and the mayor of Moscow, and served as its music director from 1994-99.
Mr. Freisitzer is also active in other positions. He founded the festival Moscow Modern in 1992 and served as its artistic director from 1992-94 and co-founded with Thomas Heinisch and Alexander Wagendristel the Ensemble Reconsil in Vienna in 2002. He has worked for the publisher Universal Edition in Vienna since 2001.
