T he Living Composers Project  

Grinberg, Alexander (b. 1961, Kharkiv). Ukrainian composer, now resident in Germany, of orchestral, chamber, choral, and piano works that have been performed throughout Europe and elsewhere.

Mr. Grinberg completed his composition studies at the College of Music in Kharkiv in 1980 and later studied composition with Igor Kovach at the Institute of Art in Kharkiv, where he graduated in 1985. He also attended masterclasses with Edison Denisov and Poul Ruders and a workshop with percussionist Gert Sørensen in Denmark in 1992.

Among his honors is the Ilya Slatin Prize from the City Council of Kharkiv (1999, for From the Abyss, House Plant and Symbols of Time). His music has been performed in Austria, Belarus, Croatia, Germany, Latvia, Macedonia, The Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, Ukraine, the UK, and the USA.

He taught composition, history and music theory at a children's music school in Kharkiv from 1987–95 and at the College of Music in Kharkiv from 1987–94 and 2000–03. He also taught composition, instrumentation and music theory at the Institute of Art in Kharkiv from 1994–2003. He taught as a musicology assistant at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen in 2005–06 and has taught at the Marina Kheifets Musikschule Subito und Akademie in Düsseldorf since 2008.

He has lived in Germany since 2003.
