Haddad, Saed (b. December 14, 1972, az-Zarqā'). Jordanian composer, now resident in Germany, of orchestral and chamber works that have been performed in Asia and Europe.
Mr. Haddad studied piano with Patricia Crockford at the Latin Patriarchal Seminary in Beit-Jala from 1983–92 and philosophy there from 1989–92 and continued his philosophy studies at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1992–93, where he earned his BA. He then returned to Jordan, where he studied musicology at the Jordan Academy of Music in Amman from 1993–96 and there earned his BMus. He next studied composition with Ari Ben-Shabetai and Menachem Zur at the Academy of Music and Dance in Jerusalem and musicology with Rute Cohen, Roger Kamien and others at Hebrew University in Jerusalem from 1998–2001, where he earned his MMus and Artist Diploma in composition. He studied composition with George Benjamin at King's College London from 2002–05 and there earned his PhD.
He also studied with André Bon and Allain Gaussin at the Académie Américaine in Fontainebleau in 2001–02 and attended the International Young Composers Meeting in Apeldoorn in 2002, where he encountered Louis Andriessen, Hanna Kulenty, Martijn Padding, and Andrew Toovey. In addition, he was a selected participant in the BBC Symphony Orchestra Proposals Project in 2004, the Music of Today Composition Project of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London in 2004 and the seminar of Ensemble Modern in 2004, where he studied with Helmut Lachenmann and Franck Ollu. He later attended a masterclass with Pascal Dusapin in Aix-en-Provence in 2007.
Among his honors are the Dean of the Faculty of Composition, Conducting and Music Education Prize at the Academy of Music and Dance (2001) and the Prix de Composition at the festival of the Académie Américaine in Fontainebleau (2001, for At a Curving Point on the Arabic Christian Line [withdrawn]). In addition, the German section of ISCM invited him for performances and a recording of Transubstantiation (withdrawn) in Dresden, Berlin and Essen (2002) and his Mouwashah (withdrawn) was a finalist in the Città di Udine competition (2002). Moreover, he was awarded the Humanities Department Scholarship at King's College London and the ORS Scholarship (2002), the New Millennium Competition Prize in Birmingham (2003–04, for Retuning the Sound of Time [Time Deconstruction I & II] [withdrawn]) and was short-listed by the Society for the Promotion of New Music (2004, for The Otherness [withdrawn]). His recent honors include a residency at the Akademie Schloss Solitude (2007–08).
Mr. Haddad is also active in other positions. He served as the BCMG/SPNM Apprentice Composer-in-Association to the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group in 2004–05, supported by the Jerwood Foundation.
He lectured on analysis, composition, orchestration, and other subjects at the Jordan Academy of Music in 2001–02. He recently lectured in Amsterdam, Berlin, Birmingham, and Estoril.
