T he Living Composers Project  

Kahn, Frédéric (b. 1966, Dijon). French composer of mostly chamber, vocal and electroacoustic works that have been performed throughout Europe and in the Americas and Asia; he is also active as a violinist.

Mr. Kahn studied violin at the Conservatoire National de Région de Dijon, attended a class with GRM (Yann Geslin, Philippe Mion and Jean Schwarz) in 1989 and then studied electroacoustic composition with Denis Dufour at the Conservatoire National de Région de Lyon from 1989-93. He also studied with Bernard Fort at the École Nationale de Musique in Villeurbanne from 1993-95 and analysis with Robert Pascal, composition with Gilbert Amy and ethnomusicology with Jean-Louis Florenz at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon from 1994-96.

In addition, he has attended seminars with Philippe Manoury, Tristan Murail, Kaija Saariaho, and Salvatore Sciarrino at IRCAM (1993, 1999), with Georges Aperghis, Pascal Dusapin and Nguyen-Thien Dao at the Centre Acanthes (1994) and with Brian Ferneyhough, Toshio Hosokawa and Johannes Schöllhorn at Royaumont (1999). He attended the annual Cursus de Composition et Informatique Musicale at IRCAM in 2000-01, where he studied with Ivan Fedele, Brian Ferneyhough, Jonathan Harvey, Philippe Hurel, Philippe Manoury, Tristan Murail, Marco Stroppa, and Alejandro Viñao.

He has composed regularly at the studios of GMVL since 1996 and at his own studio, ACT'SONS, since 1998. Many leading ensembles, including Accroche-Note, Ensemble Décadanse, Ensemble Ictus, Kaida, Passerelles, and Les Temps Modernes have performed his works, which have been featured at leading festivals throughout France, as well as in Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Mexico, Ukraine, and the USA.

He taught at the Université de Bourgogne from 1996-2000 and at the Université de Lyon in 2002-03.
