THE LIVING COMPOSERS PROJECT  

Sehyung Kim

(b. 1987, Almaty).

Austrian composer, born in Kazakhstan, of mostly stage, chamber, vocal, and piano works that have been performed in Asia and Europe.

Mr. Kim studied composition with Vladislav Agafonnikov at the P. I. Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow from 2007–12. He then studied composition with Pierluigi Billone, Beat Furrer and Bernhard Lang at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Graz from 2013–19.

Among his honours are winner of the competition de la Ville de Boulogne-Billancourt (2014), the Musikförderungspreis der Stadt Graz (2015), Erster Preis in the chamber-music competition Franz Schubert und die Musik der Moderne in Graz (2017, for Den gelben Astern ein Lied), Erster Preis in the opera competition Johann-Joseph-Fux in Graz (2018, for Consumnia), co-winner of the opera competition Neue Szene V in Berlin (2019, for unser Vater | Vater unser), the START-Stipendium vom Bundeskanzleramt der Österreichischen Regierung (2020), and a scholarship from the Akademie Musiktheater heute/Stiftung Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt am Main (2019–21, a commission to compose die goldene Platte). His music has been performed in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, Russia, South Korea, Switzerland, and Ukraine.

He is also active in other positions. He served as composer-in-residence to the Ensemble GAM in Moscow in 2013 and was an assistant organiser of the contemporary-music festival Nauryz-XXI in Almaty in 2013–14.

He has been a lecturer at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Graz since 2023.

He lived in Russia from 2007–13. He has lived in Austria since 2013 and became an Austrian citizen in 2024.
