Leimgruber, Urs (b. 1952, Lucerne). Swiss composer, now resident in France, of chamber works that have been performed throughout Europe; he is also active as a saxophonist.
Mr. Leimgruber is self-taught as a composer.
Among his honors are the Anerkennungspreis from the city of Lucerne (1977), fellowships from the Dienemann Kulturstiftung in Lucerne (1988) and the cultural department of the canton and city of Lucerne (1994) and an award from the Aargauer Kuratorium (1999, for his entire oeuvre). He has received commissions from the ARTE Saxophone Quartet, the Kulturstiftung Pro Helvetia and the Kunstverein Heidelberg.
He co-founded the electric jazz/free music ensemble OM in the 1970s. Since then, he has been active as an improvisational saxophonist and has collaborated with Jaap Blonk, Günter Christmann, Marilyn Crispell, Jacques Demierre, Michel Doneda, Fred Frith, Fritz Hauser, Fine Kwiatkowski, Joëlle Léandre, Günter Müller, Lauren Newton, Barre Phillips, and Keith Rowe, among other musicians.
He has lived in France since 1988.
