Giorgio Magnanensi

(b. 5 August 1960, Bologna).

Italian composer, now resident in Canada, of mostly orchestral, chamber and multimedia works that have been performed in Asia, Europe and North America; he is also active as a conductor.

Mr. Magnanensi studied composition and conducting successively at the Conservatorio Giovanni Battista Martini in Bologna, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, and the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg from 1976–88. He earned diplomas in choral music and conducting in Bologna in 1982 and in composition in Bologna in 1986 and Rome in 1989, as well as the Diploma di Merito in Siena in 1987.

Among his honours are First Prize in the competition of the Muzički biennale Zagreb (1987), special mention twice in the competition Alfredo Casella in Siena (1987, 1989), Primo Premio in the competition of the European Biennale in Italy (1988), Primo Premio in the competition for music for string quartet Gino Contilli in Messina (1991), the Government of Canada Award (1997), and a fellowship from the Japan Foundation in Tōkyō (1998).

As a conductor, he served as principal conductor of the Orchestra da Camera Rossini in Busto Arsizio from 1986–91, the Ensemble NYM in Bologna from 1988–95, the Ensemble Octandre in Bologna from 1990–95, and the Ensemble Musica Attuale in Bologna in 1994–95. He has served as artistic director and principal conductor of the ensemble Vancouver New Music since 2000. As a guest conductor, he has led performances in Canada, France, Ireland, Japan, and Syria.

Mr. Magnanensi is also active in other positions. He co-founded the studio for electroacoustic music Musica Musicisti e Tecnologie in Milan in 1992.

He taught counterpoint and harmony at the Conservatorio Girolamo Frescobaldi in Ferrara in 1985–86, the Conservatorio Francesco Venezze in Rovigo from 1987–90 and the Conservatorio Arrigo Boito in Parma from 1990–99. He also taught as assistant to Franco Donatoni at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana from 1991–98 and lectured in Tōkyō in 1996 and 1998. He has taught at the University of British Columbia since 2000.

He has lived in Canada since 1999.

His primary publishers are Casa Ricordi, Edizioni Edi.Pan and Edizioni Suvini Zerboni, for music written from 1985–94; music written after 1994 is self-published.
