Pavlenko, Sergey (b. May 5, 1952, Sumy). Ukrainian-born Russian composer of mostly orchestral and chamber works that have been performed throughout Europe and elsewhere.
Mr. Pavlenko studied composition with Nikolay Sydelnikov at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow from 1972–80 and instrumentation with Edison Denisov there from 1972–77.
Among his honors are First Prize in the APES saxophone ensemble competition in Paris (1988, for Pastoral), First Prize in the Concours international de composition de musique sacrée in Fribourg (1996, for Jesu Redemptor Omnium) and the title Composer of the Year from the newspaper Muzykalnoye obozrenie (2002). His music has been performed throughout Russia and in Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, The Netherlands, Serbia, the UK, and the USA and has been regularly featured at the Moscow Autumn festival since 1980.
He served as music director of the Taganka Theatre in Moscow under the direction of Yuri Lyubimov from 1976–82, where plays by Mikhail Bulgakov, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Nikolay Gogol, Aleksandr Pushkin, and others were produced.
