T he Living Composers Project  

Rodas, Arturo (b. March 3, 1954, Quito). Ecuadorian composer, now based in the UK, of orchestral, chamber, choral, piano, and electroacoustic pieces that have been successfully performed in the Americas and Europe.

Mr. Rodas studied first at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Quito and then privately with Gerardo Guevara. In 1978-79, he studied and worked with the French composer José Berghmans in Quito and Paris. He then studied composition at the École Normale de Musique in Paris on scholarships from the French government and UNESCO.

He has also attended composition and musique concrète courses at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, several seminars at IRCAM and a course with Luciano Berio at the Centre Acanthes in 1983.

In 1983, he co-founded the now inactive Ensemble Denojours in Paris and from 1986-89, he was editor of the musical magazine OPUS under the sponsorship of the Central Bank of Ecuador. Since 1990, he has lived in London (except for a brief stay in Rome in 1998-99), where he works as a free-lance composer and teacher and was formerly a critic.
