Spaan, Bart (b. 1963, Roermond). Dutch
composer of mostly chamber, piano, organ, and electroacoustic pieces that have
been successfully performed in his native country; he has also been active as a
rock musician.
Mr. Spaan studied
musicology and history in Nijmegen and Amsterdam. In the early 1980s, he played
keyboards/piano in the progressive Dutch rock group Bazooka. As a result of his
musical studies, he became interested in contemporary music, but he never lost
his affinity with popular music. In 1992, for example, he worked together with
the rock formation Gore.
Since 1997, he has
studied composition with Daan Manneke and in 1999, he attended the Fifth
International Young Composers Meeting in Apeldoorn, led by composers such as Louis Andriessen,
Steve Martland and Michael Smetanin,
where he was commissioned by ensemble de ereprijs.
In 1987, he began his collaboration
with the Spanish painter Alberto Reguera. Their collaboration has led to
several performances in both Holland and Spain (in the Stedelijk Museum
Amsterdam in 1994 and 2001, for example) and the CD Silencios (2001). His tape music has also been used during solo
exhibitions of Alberto Reguera.
Mr. Spaan also
arranges programs for Dutch radio (such as de
Concertzender for VPRO).
