THE LIVING COMPOSERS PROJECT  

Jan Van Landeghem

(b. 28 November 1954, Temse).

Belgian composer of mostly orchestral, chamber, choral, vocal, and organ works that have been performed in Africa, the Americas and Europe; he is also active as an organist.

Prof. Van Landeghem studied composition with Peter Cabus at the Conservatorium Maastricht and composition with André Laporte, fugue with Albert Delvaux and organ with Kamiel D'Hooghe at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussels. He studied at Georgia State University in Atlanta in 1985 and at Jagiellonian University in Kraków in 1985, both on the Fulbright Scholarship, and had regular contact with Karel Goeyvaerts from 1991–93.

Among his honours as a composer are the Wendungen Prijs from the Festival van Vlaanderen (1993, for Epitaffio), the Camiel Huysmans Prijs in Antwerp (1994, for Epitaffio), the Prijs voor Vocaale Compositie in Ghent (1995, for Een Tent van tamarinde), the Prix de la musique contemporaine Flandre in Québec (1995, for Silent Scream), the SABAM Prijs voor Nieuwe Muziek Compositie (1995, for his œuvre), the SABAM BAP-Prijs (1996, for Modale Suite), the DMP-Prijs (1996, for Uit de kleine wildernis), Premier Prix in the competition Gezelle (1999, for Gezelle Triptiek), the title Composer of the Year 2000 at the Ramsgate Spring Festival (2000, for Marcatissimo), and the Prix Frères Darche at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussels (2000, for his œuvre). As an organist, he has received an honourable mention in the Concours International pour Orgue de Bruges (1985) and the Publiek-Prijs in the Bach Nieuwe Muziek Confrontaties in Kortrijk (2000, for Thamasoo ma jyothir gamaya). He also served as composer-in-residence to the recorder quartet Vier op 'n rij.

As an organist, he has toured in Asia, Europe and the USA. He has performed in the trumpet–organ duo All'armi with Alain Roelant, joined on occasion by soprano Marie-Noëlle de Callataÿ, which has toured Asia and Europe. Moreover, he performs with his wife, the violinist Jennifer Spanoghe, as Duo Landini.

He taught as Professor voor Compositie at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussels and has served as chair of the department of music at the Stedelijke Academie voor Muziek, Woord en Dans in Bornem. He has lectured in the Czech Republic, Japan and elsewhere.

In addition to the works listed below, he has made more than 50 arrangements, including A Turkish Bumblebee.
