Vigani, Andrea (b. March 13, 1970, Milan). Italian composer of mostly chamber, vocal and electroacoustic works that have been performed across Europe very successfully; he is also a violinist.

Mr. Vigani graduated in 1992 from the G. Verdi Conservatorio di Milan, with his major being the violin (he was taught by S. Minella). He was also trained in composition and electroacoustic music; his teachers in these fields were Gianni Possio, G. Giuliano and Riccardo Sinigaglia. From 1989-91, he specialized in string quartet, chamber music and composition, guided by Piero Farulli, Milan Skampa and Franco Donatoni at the Fiesole School of Music and the Accademia Chigiana in Siena.

In 1989, he played in the Fiesole Chamber Orchestra, and in 1990, he participated in the Ars Musica 90 - New Gesture and Virtuosity Festivals in Brussels, as both violinist and composer. In 1994, his various works were performed in Italian cities by Ensemble Mosaico, the G. Cantelli Chamber Orchestra and the Piccola Sinfonica di Milano Chamber Orchestra.

In 1996, his work Graffiti I-IV was selected by the Gaudeamus Foundation for the international festival Composers' Arena, and in 1999, his Fondamenta Nuove was performed during the Gaudeamus Music Week (conducted by Peter Eötvös). Also in 1999, he was invited to the Biennale dei giovani artisti dell'Europa e del Mediterraneo in Rome, both as composer and violinist (with the Laboratorio Novamusica Ensemble, Venice).

He has received numerous awards, including the Jury Prize at the Città di Pavia Competition (1990), First Prize at the Edvard Grieg Competition for Young Composers in Oslo (1995), the Jury Prize at the Castello di Belveglio Competition (1996), and the Città di Udine Prize (1998). He has also received First Prize at the Pomeriggi musicali International Competition for Young Composers (2000).

He has received commissions from the Piccola Sinfonica di Milano, l'Orchestra dell'Università Cattolica di Milano, the G. Verdi Conservatorio di Milan, the Milano Classica Chamber Orchestra, the Arena di Verona Foundation, and IRCAM.

His compositions have been performed in many Italian cities (Milan, Montepulciano, Perugia, Rome, Savona, Turin, and Venice), as well as foreign cities (Amsterdam, Brasília, Brussels, Frankfurt, London, Oslo, Paris, and others). In addition, the BBC, NPS (Holland), NRK (Norway), RAI (Italy), and Swiss Television have recorded them.

IRCAM has commissioned a work from him for the 2003-04 season.
