T he Living Composers Project  

Wagendristel, Alexander (b. March 23, 1965, Vienna). Austrian composer of stage, orchestral, chamber, choral, vocal, piano, organ, harpsichord, and electroacoustic works that have been performed in Africa, Asia and Europe; he is also active as a flautist.

Mr. Wagendristel began composing at age four, began recorder lessons in 1971 and studied flute and music theory privately with Robert Wolf from 1974–80. He studied composition with Heinrich Gattermeyer, Friedrich Neumann and Erich Urbanner and flute with Werner Tripp at the Wiener Musikhochschule from 1980–90 and there earned diplomas with distinction in flute in 1988 and composition in 1990. He later attended Darmstadt and studied flute with Aurèle Nicolet in 1988.

His honors include various awards in national youth flute competitions from 1983–85, prizes in the competitions Hast Du Töne? and Neue Hausmusik (both 1985) and a prize in the Berlin competition for short opera (1997). He has also received various awards from the government of Austria, including a grant from the Austrian Ministry of Culture (1992), the Theodor Körner-Preis (1995) and a prize from the Austrian section of ISCM (2001). His music has been performed in Austria, Azerbaijan, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Russia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the USA.

As a flautist, he has been performed in the orchestra of the Vereinigten Bühnen Wien since 1987 and in the improvisational ensemble Things of NowNow from 1988–92. Moreover, he has often played new music as a soloist and chamber musician.

Mr. Wagendristel has taught at various music schools throughout Austria since 1986, including at the Wiener Konservatorium.
