T he Living Composers Project  

Zapf, Helmut (b. March 4, 1956, Rauschengesees). German composer of mostly orchestral, chamber, choral, vocal, and organ works that have been performed throughout Europe; he is also active as an organist.

Mr. Zapf privately studied organ and piano with Gerhard Voltz as a child and later served as an apprentice to an automobile mechanic from 1972–74. He then studied composition with Johannes Petzold and organ with Gottfried Preller and Hans-Günter Wauer at Eisenach and Halle church music schools and often attended seminars in Gera from 1974–79. Lastly, he studied composition with Georg Katzer at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin from 1982–86. He also attended Darmstadt in 1990, on a scholarship.

Among his awards are the Premio Valentino Bucchi in Rome (1986, for Solo), the Hanns-Eisler-Preis (1986, for Concertino) and the Kompositionspreis at the Weimarer Tage für Neue Musik (2003, for Frühling). He has also served residencies at the Villa Massimo in Rome (1995), the Cité des Internationale in Paris (1998) and the Künstlerhof Schreyahn (2000). His music has been performed at numerous festivals, including Donaueschingen (1988, 1992) and the Wittener Tage für Neue Musik (1991).

Mr. Zapf is also active in other positions. He worked as a cantor in Eisenberg from 1979–82. He founded the Ensemble Junge Musik in 1992, a new music ensemble that consists of students from various music schools in Berlin. He co-founded with his wife Karin the Randspiele in 1993, an annual series of new music concerts held in his local church in Zepernick, during which he often performs as an organist. He also plays organ at this church throughout the year.

He has taught ear training and music theory at the Hanns-Eisler-Musikhochschule since 1987 and composition, ear training and music theory at the Bezirksmusikschule Kreuzberg since 1990.

The Ortus Verlag publishes most of his works. In addition to the works listed below, Mr. Zapf completed Vater unser for 12 mixed voices by Max Reger in 1991.
