Peruvian composer of mostly stage and chamber works that have been performed in the Americas and Europe.
Prof. Velarde initially studied architecture in Lima, then studied composition with Pedro Seiji Asato, Walter Casas, Enrique Iturriaga, and José Sosaya at the Universidad Nacional de Música in Lima, where he earned his Titulado in 2005, upgraded to Licenciado en Música in 2014. He later earned his Magister en Integración e Innovación Educativa de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in Lima in 2021.
Among his honours are the Peruvian representative at the Primer Encuentro de Jóvenes Compositores de América Latina y España in Bogotá (2005), winner of the competition for choral composition of the Festival Internacional de Coros de Lima (2007, for El Sinsonte), the Premio de Composición Casa de las Américas (2007, for Espacios – dos movimientos para Orquesta Sinfónica), and the arts prize Proart (2017, for El Ayla). His music has been performed in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Germany, Mexico, Peru, Spain, the USA, and Venezuela.
He has taught as a professor at the Universidad Nacional de Música since 1999, where he taught analysis and harmony from 1999–2012 and where he has taught composition since 2012 and where he served as academic director from 2015–18. He has also taught as a professor of composition at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú since 2013.
